Larger females have more calves: influence of maternal body length on fecundity in North Atlantic right whales

چکیده
North Atlantic right whales (NARW) are critically endangered and have been declining in abundance since 2011. In the past decade, human-caused mortalities from vessel strikes entanglements increasing, while birth rates population at a 40 yr low. addition to abundance, recent studies shown that NARW length-at-age is decreasing due energetic impacts of sub-lethal entanglements, body condition poorer than closely related southern whales. We examined whether shorter lengths associated with reduced fecundity female NARW. compared age-corrected, modeled metrics length 3 fecundity: age first reproduction, average inter-birth interval, number calves produced per potential reproductive year. found significantly interval year, but not reproduction. Larger had intervals more also higher lifetime calf production, this was result larger having longer spans, as generally over yr. Declining sizes contributor low decade. Efforts reduce could help maintain viability by increasing improving resiliency other anthropogenic climate impacts.

Summertime foraging ecology of North Atlantic right whales
North Atlantic right whales were instrumented with suction-cup mounted, time-depth recorders (TDR) during the summers of 2000 and 2001 to examine their diving and foraging behavior. Simultaneous observations of temperature, salinity and the vertical distribution of their principal prey, Calanus finmarchicus stage 5 copepodites (C5), were obtained along each whale’s track with a conductivity-tem...
متن کاملExpert elicitation of seasonal abundance of North Atlantic right whales Eubalaena glacialis in the mid-Atlantic
North Atlantic right whales Eubalaena glacialis are among the most endangered of the large whales. Although protected since 1935, their abundance has remained low. Right whales occupy the Atlantic Ocean from southern Greenland and the Gulf of St. Lawrence south to Florida. The highly industrialized mid-Atlantic region is part of the right whales’ migratory corridor, and gaps in knowledge of the...

IN THEIR REPORT “WHALES BEFORE WHALING in the North Atlantic” (25 July, p. 508), J. Roman and S. R. Palumbi conclude, using genetic markers, that humpback, minke, and fin whale populations in the North Atlantic were once much larger than previously thought, which goes against the current “wisdom” in International Whaling Commission (IWC) circles. This discrepancy may have several explanations. ...
متن کاملWhales before whaling in the North Atlantic.
It is well known that hunting dramatically reduced all baleen whale populations, yet reliable estimates of former whale abundances are elusive. Based on coalescent models for mitochondrial DNA sequence variation, the genetic diversity of North Atlantic whales suggests population sizes of approximately 240,000 humpback, 360,000 fin, and 265,000 minke whales. Estimates for fin and humpback whales...
متن کاملCalls of North Atlantic right whales Eubalaena glacialis contain information on individual identity and age class
Passive acoustic monitoring is a powerful tool that allows remote detection of marine mammals through their vocalizations. While call detection provides information on species presence, additional information may be contained within the vocalizations that could provide more information regarding the demographics and/or number of individuals in a particular area based on passive acoustic detecti...
